Over the past few weeks, doctors in Delhi have been observing a steep increase in cases of viral illness, caused by the sudden change in the weather. Hospitals are commonly seeing patients with high-grade fever with body ache and throat ache. Doctors have advised people not to panic.

At  the Lok Nayak Hospital, more than 100-150 patients with the symptoms of viral illness are being seen every day. Patients of all age groups are presenting with a high fever. However, none of them need hospital admission, stated the hospital’s medical director, Dr Suresh Kumar.

Due to the irregular rainfall in the city over the past few weeks, there has been an increase in the cases of viral fever, dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. A report by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation of Delhi (SDMC) indicates that there have been 158 cases of dengue, 69 cases of malaria and 40 cases of chikungunya in the city thus far.

Dr SP Byotra, senior consultant, Internal medicine, Sir Ganga Ram hospital stated that this is seen every year and there is a need to stay careful. He advised that people should consult a doctor if the fever persists for more than three days. Dr Byotra also cautioned against self-medication as it can result in delay in the treatment.
